California Sexual Assault Law
Sexual assault is a general legal term, which describes a wide range of crimes. Crimes such as rape, child molestation, oral copulation, lewd acts on a child and sodomy are considered to be forms of sexual assault. In the state of California, a single count of sexual assault is classified as a serious felony under the state's Three Strikes Law. Such a count will lead to substantial prison time and a requirement for life-time registration as a sex offender.
A sexual assault case that includes what prosecutors call "special circumstances," (such as kidnapping, burglary, or robbery) is even more serious. In California, convictions on charges of sexual assault with special circumstances may lead to a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
If a person is charged with crimes similar to the defendants' charges in the case described above, they will need the help of an experienced criminal defense team to help them effectively deal with their case.
